NEW YORK STATE OFFICIALS HOLD INFORMATIONAL SESSION TO ADDRESS CARBON CAPTURE AND SEQUESTRATION

New York State officials from various agencies held an informational session from 3-8 p.m., Wednesday, December 3, at Jamestown Community College to discuss the State’s efforts to address climate change through Carbon Dioxide Capture and Sequestration (CCS).

CCS is cutting-edge technology that allows for a coal power plant’s carbon dioxide by-product to be collected, compressed into a liquid-type substance and piped more than one mile underground. The method prevents release of carbon dioxide into the air.

The visit by state agencies (the Department of Environmental Conservation, the New York State Energy Research and Development Agency, the New York Power Authority, the State Museum, the Empire State Development Corporation and State Assistant Secretary for Energy, Thomas Congdon) included exhibits that explained the CCS process.

Members of the public visited exhibits and were able to participate in individual discussions with State agency representatives as well as scientists from Praxair, Ecology & Environment and Batelle Laboratories. State officials also provided three short presentations throughout the 3-8 p.m. time period, explaining CCS.

The session did not concentrate on the BPU’s proposed power plant project, although CCS is the same technique to be used in the new plant project.
